The western Batangas town of Calatagan, known for its fabulous beaches and resorts, is a 2nd income class municipality. It has a land area of 11,200 hectares and a 2015 population of 56,449. It is part of the Province of Batangas’ 1st legislative district.

Up until late in the 19th century, Calatagan along with the town of Lian was mostly a privately-owned estate. Although it was formally established as a municipality as “recently” as 1912, already during the American colonial era, Calatagan was settled long before the arrival of the Spaniards as attested to by findings from its archeological sites. Calatagan can be reached from Manila via Tagaytay.
