American-Held Prisoners-of-War in Balayan, 1900-01

Below is a transcribed list of mostly Batangueño prisoners-of-war held by the United States Army at a facility in the municipality of Balayan in late 1900 up to the middle of 1901. At this time, the Philippine-American War was still raging and would not end, at least officially, until April 1902 with the surrender of General Miguel Malvar.

Majority of the prisoners in the record were “insurgents” — the term signifying that, as far as the Americans were concerned, they had set up a legitimate colonial government and that the Filipino revolutionaries were “rebels” against it. Of course, from the Filipino point of view, the Americans had no right to be in the Philippines in the first place.

There were others who were imprisoned for what may sound like innocuous offenses such as “possession of a bolo,” which although a deadly weapon was also used in the farm; or possession of “suspicious papers.”

Towards the end of the document, prisoners were described to have been arrested for what were apparently civilian offenses such as the theft of a pony, wife-beating, or stealing from stores. In other words, even non-POW’s were kept in the same facility as those who were taken in for being part of what the Americans called an “insurgency.”

The original document from which this list was transcribed was handwritten, and the penmanship was not always legible, especially towards the end. Hence, confidence is low in some of the transcription. There were also names that might have been written down phonetically, i.e. as heard by the American soldier who wrote the records. All these suspect transcriptions are annotated with suggested alternatives at the end of each table.

The original list contained an additional column with the title “By Whom,” that is, the American officer who made the arrest. To conserve space, this column is not included in this transcription.
